About Us

The Society caters for collectors of Irish philatelic material and publishes a regular publication – Irish Philately. Amongst the areas of interest to our members are:-

Pre stamp material, Irish Postal history from earliest times, GB stamps used in Ireland, Registered, Express and Censored mail, Postage due items, the Transition Period (1916-25), Irish overprints on GB stamps (1922-35), First Day Covers, Airmails, including first flights, Maritime mail, Destination mail, Postmarks and Cancellations of all sorts and above all the Stamps themselves from Overprints to Modern material, anything Irish in fact, and that includes Northern Ireland just as much as the Republic.

Amongst the benefits of membership of The Irish Philatelic Circle are:-

  • Irish Philately published three times a year (April/August/December) in full colour
  • Annual specialised illustrated listing of all new issues, postmarks, stationery, slogans etc. with “That Was The Year That Was” in full colour – see also below
  • Annual general meeting and display competition which rotates between Dublin, Belfast/Portadown and London
  • Postal auctions at least twice a year for members to buy and sell
  • Access to members’ area on website containing all back issues of the Irish Philately from 1960 together with a range of other publications e.g. The Revealer ( Eire Philatelic Association ), Fred Dixon Random notes, Die Harfe, Irish Stamp News, DF Newsletters, Stampa catalogues, the works of Barry Cousins and various miscellaneous articles. This is the most comprehensive website of Irish philatelic literature and is being continually expanded.
  • and the means to contact those with a common philatelic interest

The majority of our members are in Britain and Ireland but we have members from all around the World and you are welcome to join us wherever you may live.

The annual That Was The Year That Was is a separate publication and records in detail all Irish stamp issues, varieties, special event and slogan postmarks, presentation packs, society and exhibition souvenirs issued during the previous year. Special features include a detailed record of all definitive booklet and coil printings and a list of slogans used at the various Mail Centres. A selection of recent articles from Irish Philately is available on the website which is changed from time to time but to get the full content you will need to become a member. The Members’ Area is available only to members of the Irish Philatelic Circle and contains a growing library of information as detailed above that is generally not readily available elsewhere together with details of other projects being undertaken by the Membership. All back issues of our Journal are also available on the members’ section of the website.
